Embedded Engineering, LLC can perform a variety of engineering services to meet your product development needs.  Some samples from our design portfolio are available here.

Specification and Documentation:

Creation of product requirement specifications, block diagrams, implementation plans, test plans, etc.

Hardware Design and Development:

A full range of design services are available ranging from an independent engineering design review of your existing work up to complete turn-key product development (incorporating all hardware, software/firmware, mechanical, and production needs).

We use OrCAD Caption 7.x and 9.x for schematic entry and MultiSim 7 for mixed signal simulation of hardware designs as necessary.

Our R&D lab is well stocked with test equipment including:

  • Logic analyzers from Tektronix, TechTools, and American Arium
  • Digital Signal Oscilloscopes from Tektronix (TDS2024, TDS210, TPS720)
  • Analog Oscilloscopes
  • HP/Agilent programmable power supplies
  • BP Microsystems device programmers (BP-1200 x2)
  • Sencore LCR-77
  • Huntron Tracker 2000
  • Fluke 9010A In System Troubleshooter (great for reverse engineering older systems!)
  • Device programmers from Xilinx, Lattice, Altera, Atmel, Zilog, Ciebo, Silicon Labs and many others.

Software/Firmware Design and Development:

Embedded Engineering's programming abilities cover the spectrum from small, 8 and 16 bit microcontrollers such as the Atmel AVR and TI MSP430 using assembly and C, to 32 bit ARM based systems such as the Atmel AT91SAM9261 and AT91R40008, Intel PXA270, Freescale i.MX31, etc. in C, C++, and assembly.  Traditional PC/Windows programming services are also available.

All of our preferred embedded environments are fully licensed and supported by complementary debugging hardware:

  • ARM SDT 2.51 (C, C++, Assembly)
  • IAR Embedded Workbench (C, C++, Assembly, ARM7/9/11, Xscale)
  • Intel V-Tune (Xscale)
  • Keil's CA51 (C, Assembly, 8051 family)
  • HP InfoTech's CodeVision 1.2x (C, Assembly, AVR)
  • Segger J-Link JTAG debuggers
  • EPI JEENI JTAG debuggers
  • Abatron BDI-2000 JTAG debuggers
  • ICE and JTAG systems from Atmel, Microchip, ZAX, American Arium and others

In addition, we support a variety of GNU based toolchains and other compilers as necessary.

Software and firmware systems (especially embedded GUI's and entertainment applications) can often be simulated using a PC based environment, or prototyped using a variety of existing single board computers and evaluation boards from numerous vendors.

PCB Layout and Prototyping:

OrCAD Layout Plus 7.x and 9.x are our PCB layout tools of choice.  We have done countless two and four layer through hole and SMT PCB's, but the majority of our newer ARM based designs have been using six layers or more with 5 mil trace/space rules and BGA components down to 0.5mm and passives down to 0402.  We try to tailor our PCB requirements for optimal manufacturing cost savings based on the technology required and the capabilities of the final assembly location and volume.

Our lab includes production equipment from:

  • Vision Engineering (Mantis stereoscopic viewer)
  • Metcal (soldering irons, fume extraction)
  • Hakko (hot air rework)
  • A.P.E. (Chipmaster 1000 BGA rework)
  • APS (convection oven and selective solder systems)
  • OK Industries (SMT paste dispensing, hot plates, hot air pencils)

We typically hand assemble our own prototype PCB's to ensure correct operation, with occasional X-ray services and larger volume prototype support from various local assembly houses.

Our product enclosure background includes experience with SLS, SLA, FDM, casting, and machining .  We have an LPKF 2D router and a Taig milling machine that are occasionally pressed into service for prototyping, but with the complexity and level of resolution required in portable devices we typically work with other, local vendors to produce prototype enclosures.

Miscellaneous Services:

On numerous occasions we've worked with overseas factories to facilitate lower cost volume manufacturing solutions for customers.  We have had success with design 'hand-offs' utilizing a tested reference design and data package which is then revised locally in the country of manufacture to take advantage of parts availability and manufacturing preferences, and we've had good luck with transitioning complete designs for offshore manufacturing only.

We are familiar with UL safety requirements as well as FCC Part 15 compliance and although we do no have our own scanning range we have worked closely with the UL lab up the road a couple miles.

Many Graphical User Interfaces for consumer electronics and multimedia devices and have shipped using our designs-- if you need GUI work (and especially gaming and multimedia coding) we are exceptionally well versed in the field.

We also have experience with custom LCD panel design using either dot matrix or segment drive LCD technology.
